If you recently purchased an electric vehicle (EV) you're likely considering how to charge your vehicle at home.
There are two options for residential, and Livewire is here to help you decide which option will best support your driving needs.
Level 1 is your standard 120v outlet. Most garages are equipped with this outlet, and can charge at a rate of three to five electric miles per hour of charge.
This is a good option if you don't plan to drive your EV often. But if it's meant for daily driving then this might not work for you.
Level 2 is 240v and is faster speed charge rate compared to Level 1. Its the most common install in homes because it can charge your Electric Vehicle at a rate of 6-10 hours (speed charge rate depends on amperage).
If your driving daily then Level 2 EV charge station is the best option for you. Tesla Wall Connect falls into category Level 2.
"Alex did a great job of installing my Tesla wall charger. Very professional and on time. Also he gave a very competitive price compared to the big companies for the install." Michael W.
Chargepoint is the best option because of how many amperage options you can set this charging system to: from as low as 16 amps up to 50 amps. The ability to set it to 50 amps is the reason its the best on the market. The Chargepoint system gives you the fastest charging speed over all of the other home charging systems on this list.
Cost for the unit: $549
Max amps charge: 50
The Tesla Wall Connector is the home charging system that I install the most. It’s a great option because it can give you a high charging amperage of 48 amps. Many people think that it only works on Tesla cars, but the truth is that it’s compatible with most electric vehicles.
Cost of the unit: $475
Max amps charge: 48
Grizzle is a great home charging system that is favored by many because of its price point. For a price of $349 it will give you a charge speed of 40 amps. This system is also very simple to install by just hanging it on the wall and plugging it into a Nema 14-50 outlet.
Cost of the unit: $349
Max amps charge: 40
The Juicebox charging system is a good option because it simply plugs into your Nema 14-50 outlet so you are able to start charging your electric vehicle quickly. Max amperage setting is 40 amps.
Cost of the unit: $529
Max amps charge: 40
A great option for your home charging needs, the Blink system offers the option of hardwiring or just plugging into a Nema 14-50 outlet. The reason it’s lower on the list is because its max charge amperage is 32 amps which is the lowest speed compared to the others on this list.
Cost of the unit: $560-$699
Max amps charge: 32
Another option is to install a Nema 14-50 outlet and plug in your mobile ev charger. You won't have wifi capabilities and will only get 32 amps of charging speed.

The main failure point in EV home charging is the outlet itself. If you can take that out of the equation and hardwire it directly into the EV home charging station your decreasing the chance of something wrong happening.
In my opinion the Chargepoint is the best for hardwired option.
Yes its cheaper to charge at home than at a charging station. A charging station is a business and they have to make a profit off the same energy you get at home.
The main difference is charging speed. Level 1 is the slowest charging speed and most likely won't need anything from an electrician because you can plug into a basic outlet in your garage. Level 2 is higher charging speed but will require a Licensed electrician to come in direct power from the electrical panel to where you want the charging station to be.
This guide will explore the benefits, costs, steps, and considerations involved in installing an EV charging station at home.
With proper planning and understanding, you can enjoy the convenience of charging your EV right from your driveway or garage.
